Lights Out 10pm -11pm 4th August

LIGHTS OUT IS AN INVITATION TO EVERYONE IN THE UK TO TURN OFF THEIR LIGHTS FROM 10PM UNTIL 11PM, LEAVING ON A SINGLE LIGHT OR CANDLE FOR THIS SHARED MOMENT OF REFLECTION.

.

LIGHTS OUT is part of 14-18 NOW WWI Centenary Art Commissions, which is a major cultural programme taking place this summer across the United Kingdom to mark the centenary of the First World War.

.

The large-scale event, 100 years after Britain declared war on Germany on 4th August 1914, is aiming to echo the British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey’s famous epitaph:

The lamps are going out all over Europe:

we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”

.

“It will be a national shared moment of reflection.”

As a part of this event, and joining in with many towns and villages all over the country, there will be a chance to light and leave a pillar candle with a very short act of commemoration at the foot of the war memorial at 10.30pm. Turn all your lights out at 10pm and congregate with your candle outside church at 10.30pm.
This follows on from the Evensong and Commemoration of WW1 at St Mary Magdalene’s earlier in the month and is a part of the continuing series of events run by the church to commemorate this centenary year – so keep looking out for the posters…

        Revd Rob,
This is an event that has not been publicised enough: many thanks for contributing to this posting.
