May Day 2019

Another glorious day,
Another glorious May Day celebration,

May Day started with the children delivering posies of flowers
to the senior citizens in the village. Also d
uring the morning, chairs were placed around the Cross for the benefit of the children, their families and village residents, all of whom had gathered to watch the familiar and traditional proceedings.

All the school pupils, led by their teachers, and all in wonderful Victorian dress, walked across Wood Street, through the churchyard to the church gate.  Then May Queen, Felicity Eyre, and her Consort, Henry Brandrick, led their attendants and the school to the Eleanor Cross.  After a short intermission to get everyone in place, the May Queen Felicity was crowned by Richard Paragreen. Richard has been a school Governor and volunteer reader for many years.

Starting with the youngest members of school, the traditional dances around the Maypole began.

A huge thank you must be given to the teachers, who had been practicing, with the traditional music in the schoolyard for a couple of weeks. Thanks also to them and all the parents who had produced the costumes. Thank you also Richard, a job well done, dressed all in black, in a sweltering May afternoon. And finally thank you to head teacher, Martin Adamson, for continuing a well-loved village tradition.

A beautiful timeless celebration. I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon off work to watch my daughter take part in such a wonderful tradition. Geddington school is the BEST!
