| The Church of St Mary Magdalene has been a major spiritual and visual focus in the centre of Geddington for over 1000 years. The original stone church was already 250 years old when the Eleanor Cross was erected in 1294. Over the seven centuries since then it has been extended, modified , enhanced and restored many times, both inside and out, but always reflecting the ever changing contemporary architectural styles and the evolving religious needs of the parish it serves. Those modifications to that first structure are all plainly visible and clearly trace its transition into the unique building that is now instantly recognisable as Geddington Church.
It is obvious that such an important and historical building needs to
be preserved for the enjoyment and use of future generations.
In 1995 a group of residents, most but not all committed church
attenders, concerned for the long-term conservation of the Church
decided to set-up the Friends of St Mary Magdalene Chuch. The
friends have been very successful in raising and spending money
to this end over the last seven years. (Funds raised cannot be
used to subsidise the parochial or ecclesiastical cost of the
parish)
Projects for our spending are agreed with the Vicar and Parochial Church Council and usually, for larger schemes especially, require us to build up money over two or more years. |
