The Liberty Tree - Village Hall, February 26th
Geddington Village Theatre is delighted to present the return of Hugh Lupton who enthralled us last winter with his spellbinding tales of John Clare and the enclosure of the countryside. This time Hugh has teamed up with foksinger Nick Hennessey to tell the stories of Robin Hood, the hero of Sherwood. And for us there’s a local link: not only is he appearing in the village panto this year, but in 1354 a Robyn Hode was imprisoned in Rockingham Castle for poaching and there are stories of Robin Hood in Brigstock. For more than 600 years the stories of Robin Hood have held sway in the English imagination. With Little John, Will Scarlet, Much the Miller’s Son, Friar Tuck and the rest of the Merry Fellowship he inhabits a leafy clearing in our hearts where it’s always high summer, where venison is always roasting and the wrongs and injustices of the world are mended by subversion and trickery. In The Liberty Tree, Hugh Lupton and Nick Hennessey sing and tell their way deep into the secret, dappled, winding ways of Sherwood and at the same time tell true stories of the ancient tradition of English Dissent. ‘Hugh Lupton is a teller of great intensity and subtle power.’ Sing Out (USA) ‘Nick Hennessey’s fluid style and engaging presence is…a compelling demonstration of storytelling’s many faces.’ The Times ‘They have spearheaded the revival of storytelling in this country, helping to transform it from a moribund anachronism to a vigorous and contemporary form of entertainment.’ The Independent Suitable for adults and children 12+ Tickets from John Padwick at 01536 746272 or johnpadwick@talk21.com
